Sustainability as a living tradition

Preserving the natural environment - that is a living tradition in Osttirol. Unadulterated nature has been a source of life for people for generations. What once seemed like a lack is now the spirit of the times. You will look in vain in Osttirol for bed castles, overcrowded ski slopes and artificial leisure parks. In Osttirol, quality and regionality are a matter of course - thanks to family-run businesses and regional, high-quality products. The people are proud of their customs and traditions. Mountain farming and regional craftsmanship are held in high esteem. And yes, the people of Osttirol may sometimes be idiosyncratic, but one thing is certain: they are authentic.

Vacation on the farm

Immerse yourself in sustainable life on the farm. Learn about their thoughts and actions. It is based on natural cycles, annual cycles, traditions and values across generations.

Three tips on how to make your vacation more sustainable.

Use public transportation:

To promote environmental sustainability, you can curb your CO2 emissions by using public transportation. Did you know that a good 75 percent of the CO2 footprint of a vacation trip is caused by the journey to and from the destination? It is therefore a good idea to plan your arrival and departure to Osttirol without a private car. With the Osttirol Guest Card, you can even use many forms of public transport free of charge. This means you can get around Osttirol cheaper, safer and more relaxed.

Rent sports equipment instead of buying it:

Instead of buying sports equipment that will gather dust in the cellar for months after your vacation and take up valuable space, you can easily rent it locally. There are rental stations for skis, snowboards, snowshoes, bikes and climbing equipment including accessories throughout Osttirol. You will always receive well-maintained equipment that meets the latest safety standards. To promote economic sustainability , look for the right rental station on the interactive map of Osttirol.

Shop regionally in Osttirol:

Whether you are looking for a souvenir or want to stock up on a few groceries for your vacation: Purchase products from regional suppliers and farm stores. In this way, you are making an important contribution to social sustainability, as your purchases secure and create local jobs. What's more, shopping in the small, lovingly designed stores is an experience in itself. In particular, a stroll through the sunny town of Lienz, where many small boutiques and regional stores line the pedestrian zone in the old town, should not be missed on your shopping tour.

Mountain life and agriculture

The natural and cultural landscape of Osttirol is characterized by mountain farming

The farmers in Osttirol combine tradition with modernity: sustainable energy sources, innovative production methods and knowledge passed down through generations make our region not only unique, but also fit for the future. The majority of the flora through which our hikes and bike tours lead is cultivated by our farmers. Through hard work on the farms and the high alpine pastures, they maintain the landscape - our place of regeneration, our sporting playground. It is also good to see how the animals on the farms are kept in a species-appropriate manner and provided with healthy feed. In addition to the skill of the farmers, nature ensures the unique taste and character of the products.

Farmers therefore provide for us in two ways: they preserve the landscape, the basis for our recreational area. Then the regional products end up on our plates at home, in huts, restaurants and hotels via short routes.

In addition to well-tended fields, meadows and alpine pastures, traditional architecture is a cultural asset that makes Osttirol unique. Farms and alpine pastures, "Schupfen" and Klaubstein walls - our cultural landscape is the legacy of mountain farming in Osttirol. Archaic mountain pasture ensembles such as the Jagdhausalm and the Oberstalleralm characterize the landscape and contribute to the personality of our region. The farmsteads, different in all valleys and still particularly well preserved in Villgratental, are prime examples of Alpine architecture. Osttirol is a place where you can sit back and enjoy the beauty of nature while contemplating a piece of culture.

Walk through nature with open eyes and respect it! Learn more about the importance of agriculture for our region when you visit a farm. Let us show you how farmers preserve Osttirol's nature for our children and grandchildren. Combine the taste of products from Osttirol with your experiences on vacation. You will see that the taste of Osttirol is authentic, unique and lasting!
